At a glance
In Marrakech, Instagram and TikTok do not replace walking into the shop, the riad or the terrace. They bring discovery, then the conversation — often on WhatsApp. A useful business shows the real place (Gueliz, medina, Hivernage), the offer, the hours, and speaks the language of its clients. “10 viral reels” tutorials ignore the tourist season, the dirham, and the fact that a booking does not work like a US checkout.
What social media does here — and what it does not
A riad, a restaurant, a hammam, a craft shop or a clinic does not have the same funnel as a Shopify brand.
What often converts: honest photo or video → Instagram / TikTok message → WhatsApp → visit or booking. Google (a Google Business profile, reviews, directions) works in parallel, especially for “near me” searches.
What rarely converts: an aesthetic feed with no address, no order-of-magnitude price, no client language, and nobody answering in the evening.
WhatsApp Business is not one more network to “animate”. It is often the till. Official tools exist; you still need a displayed number and a reply.
Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage: not the same persona
Three targeting mistakes come back.
- Copying a Dubai hotel when you are a neighbourhood restaurant in Gueliz: the visual promises another place.
- Only targeting tourists when your turnover also comes in low season, from Moroccan clients.
- Only targeting locals when your rooms fill in French and English.
Before the editorial calendar, one sentence is enough: who should book or walk in this week, and in which language? That is the start of a persona — the same exercise as in digital marketing training.
Formats that serve a business (not an agency)
| Format | Role in Marrakech |
|---|---|
| Post / carousel | Offer, menu, riad room, before/after, team |
| Story | Hours, dish of the day, stock, “we are open”, same-day social proof |
| Reel / TikTok | Discovery: the way there, atmosphere, craft gesture, a mistake to avoid |
| DM + WhatsApp | Conversion. A bio link with no human reply is useless |
Local copywriting is concrete: neighbourhood, landmark (Bab Doukkala, 11 Janvier, Guéliz), language, one call (book, ask for the rate, come between 12:00 and 14:00). “You won’t believe this” hooks burn trust faster here than a still shot of the terrace.
Canva keeps an identity readable (colour, type, margins) on Stories and ads. It is not the core of the job; it stops a feed made of six fonts.
For the programme (social, content, Canva, then ads): digital marketing training in Marrakech. To structure paid campaigns: Meta Ads in Morocco.
Organic first, ads second
Organic content builds proof. Meta ads (Instagram / Facebook) and TikTok Ads buy attention.
Move to paid when:
- the offer fits in one sentence and one image
- the place is identifiable
- you know what you count (message, call, click to WhatsApp — not “views”)
- someone answers messages the same day
A dirham budget on stock photos, or on an account that does not name the city, mostly teaches you what a click costs. Retargeting only makes sense if an audience already exists (page visitors, a list, engagement).
Google Ads Search is another lever (intent such as “restaurant Gueliz”, “riad medina”); it is not this article’s subject, but it sits in the same training path.
Online shop vs a physical business
If the product sells online (Morocco delivery, CMI, cash on delivery), Instagram/TikTok feed a shop: see launch an e-commerce shop in Morocco and e-commerce training.
If the product is consumed on site, social media must cut friction to the door or to the booking. Measuring only followers is measuring the décor.
Common mistakes
- Buying followers. That does not book a table.
- Posting three times a day in high season, then disappearing in November.
- Filtering photos until the client does not recognise the room.
- Ignoring Google reviews while “boosting” a Reel.
- Leaving an intern with no brief (language, offers, what you are not allowed to promise).
- Paying for ads with no pixel, no event, no Ads Manager objective.
In short
In Marrakech, Instagram and TikTok work when they look like the real business and when WhatsApp (or booking) is staffed. Formats follow: proof, place, language, one call. Ads come after, not instead of the substance.
